BD-Live requirements

Postby mk1 » Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:40 am

Hi,

we're considering a BD-Live product which is also our first BD-J title. I've been unable to find any information/docs on how to develop a BD-Live title. Before going into the BD-J stuff we'd need to know what are the requirements for setting up a BD-Live server? Does anyone here have any experince or know where to find some info regarding this process? I'd also like to know if there are any particular expenses to consider.

Any help would be much appreciated!

As far as I know there is no such thing as a fully defined 'BD-Live server'... the BD-Live profile merely defines the ability of a player to communicate across the internet using TCP/IP. So, any HTTP serving software e.g. Apache, or another custom written server will be able to communicate with your player. Using Java's RMI (Remote Method Invocation) feature may be something to investigate as it would provide a convenient 'object level' communication layer between your players Java 'Xlet' and a servers Java 'Servlet'. For this you would need a webserver running Apache with Tomcat. I've no experience with BD-Live so these are just musings, does anyone here have experience with network communication on Profile 2.0 players yet?

Thanks for the answer Chris.

What I'd really like to know is that if there's somekind of lisence fee that you need to pay to set up such a server or host files/enable content transfer for the BD-Live title or the player. My boss told me that you need to pay some extravagant amount of money to the AACS LA to be able to get the system running, but this rumour was from the HD-DVD conference held a year ago.

But what I understand now is that basicly anyone can set up a server with BD-Live content and author a title that communicates with it without any involvement from the AACS LA?
